Internet trading will be significantly influenced by the Distance Selling Directive which was implemented in the UK on 4th June 2000. It is a consumer protection measure applying to contracts made between business and a consumer where the two parties do not meet and use instead a form of distance communication (telephone, mail, Internet) to agree and conclude the contract. It dictates that advice must be given to the e-customer before the contract is formed. Whilst financial services are excluded from its remit there is a new draft directive on Distance Selling of Financial Services in circulation.
